Worship Customs at St. John's In consideration of other worshippers, please be as quiet as possible when coming into the church and while others are receiving communion and use this time for prayer and meditation. When passing in front of the cross over the altar, it is appropriate to stop and bow your head. At St. John's we pray (during The Prayers of the People and The Great Thanksgiving) either standing, sitting or kneeling. When receiving communion, please feel free to stand if kneeling is difficult. You are welcome to receive the bread (the host) or the wine or both. The wine may be sipped from the chalice or received by intinction (dipping the host in the wine). If you “intinct” simply dip the host into the wine without letting your fingers touch the wine. A blessing is available for those not wishing to receive communion. All baptized children are welcome to receive communion. If this is new to your family, it is the parents' decision whether their children receive the sacrament or a blessing. Children who extend their hands will be offered the sacrament. They should fold their arms across their chest to receive a blessing. Children are invited pick up a "Children's Worship Bulletin" and crayons or an Arch Book from the narthex (entry hall).
