We have a wonderful Sunday School program at St. John’s. Our children attend Sunday School classes on the 2nd through 4th Sundays of the month. Sunday School begins at 10:15AM. See our School Calendar for details. After completing the weekly lesson, children are invited upstairs to receive communion with their parents. Our children are separated into six different classrooms. We have a preschool class, a combined kindergarten – first grade, a combined second – third grade, a combined fourth – fifth grade, and a middle school. All of our teachers have had a CORI evaluation and have attended our Safe Church Training. Children are encouraged to attend church with their parents during our Family Festival Service which is held the first Sunday of each month. Our Sunday School students serve as readers and ushers during the Family Festival Service. Our younger students are treated to a children’s sermon delivered by our Rector, Rev. Edmunds.
Sunday School Curriculum http://group.com/sunday-school/faithweaver FaithWeaver Sunday school curriculum weaves together a family's journey in faith by teaching the same Bible truth across all age levels. This way, families can apply those truths together in their daily lives, growing individually in their faith and as a family unit. FaithWeaver encourages family development Everyone - from toddlers to teens and adults - studies the same Bible Point in an age-appropriate way. FaithWeaver lessons provide memorable Bible learning plus interactive teaching tools to engage and captivate students. Lessons are designed to encourage faith development beyond Sunday so faith grows all week long. FaithWeaver takes families through the entire Bible in three years FaithWeaver is a three-year program broken up into four quarters per year. To help students understand the Old Testament as a whole, learners explore it chronologically during the summer and fall quarters. Then winter and spring quarter FaithWeaver lessons focus on the New Testament.

In addition to our weekly lessons, the children of St. John’s are treated to a variety of special activities throughout the year. Our annual October Nights celebration is one that the children look forward to. They can dress up in their Halloween costumes, participate in a pumpkin carving contest and eat some delicious chili and hot dogs. In December, the children attend an Advent Wreath Workshop. They learn about the meaning and symbolism of the wreath and they make a wreath for their families to take home and use during Advent. The Christmas Pageant on Christmas Eve is always a highlight of the Christmas season. In February, the children attend a Mardi Gras pancake breakfast to kick off Lent. We host an annual Easter Egg Hunt for the children that worship with us on Easter Sunday. Summer is a time when our children can experience the joy of Vacation Bible School. __________________________________________________________________________________________
In addition to the lessons and activities that our children experience throughout the year, they also take part in three very important Stewardship/Outreach activities. The first is an ongoing drive to raise money to sponsor two children from the Christian Children’s Fund. The students of St. John’s receive offertory envelopes to fill and donate on a weekly basis to help Fikri, our friend in Indonesia, and Francisca, our friend in Brazil. Our children are encouraged to donate food items during our Turkey Drive in November. The children also raise money in the spring to donate to Heifer International. This past year we were able to donate two water buffalo to families in need.
Highlights of St. John's Safe Church Policy
Purpose: to protect the safety, emotional health and well being of the children and adults of the parish and to respect the dignity of every person involved in parish educational and other ministries. All covered individuals are required to sign a “Covenant Statement,” agree to a CORI check and attend appropriate training (training is offered both within the parish and in diocesan training sessions). Key procedures: Volunteers working with children shall be active parishioners who have been in the parish for at least six months. A person not yet eligible can work under the direct supervision of another person “qualified” under the Policy
Two adults must be present at all times when working with children. The Church School Director and the Rector, in accordance with the Policy, can waive this rule.
There should be no time when others cannot freely observe the activities in which children are participating and no “secret” deals or gifts should be offered to children.
Serious disciplinary problems should be referred to a child’s parents
No convicted sex offender or one who is accused of child abuse can be involved with children. If, in good faith, abuse is disclosed or suspected it should be made known, in person, to the Rector. In Massachusetts, all clergy are “mandated reporters” and thus must report any sign or evidence of child abuse to the Department of Social Services. NOTE: This is a brief summary of the “Safe Church Policy” adopted by our vestry. A copy of the full policy is available through the Parish office. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
